The black man accused in the killing of a Maryland mother has waived extradition in a North Carolina court

Curtis Lopez, 45, was arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is suspected of killing his wife, 51-year-old Jane McQuain. McQuain's 11-year-old son, William, remains missing, said Capt. Paul Starks, a police spokesman in Montgomery County, Maryland. "We'll have a better idea on Tuesday when we'll get Curtis Lopez back to Maryland. We had two detectives try to talk to him, but his attorney said no," Starks said. Police are still looking for the boy and have searched various locations, the spokesman said. Though police described the search as active and intense in a statement, Starks said they must also be realistic. "He could be deceased, but we're still holding out hope," the spokesman said. An Amber Alert has been issued for William McQuain, who is described as a light-skinned African-American, about 5 feet tall and weighing about 85 pounds. The case began when a friend of the boy's mother reported her missing, saying he had not seen her for about two weeks and that he was concerned. When detectives arrived at the woman's home in Germantown, they found Jane McQuain dead in her bedroom. Her son was not there and the woman's vehicle, a Honda CRV, was gone. It was found later. Police think that Lopez may have had a residence in North Carolina, but they have few other details linking him to the area.
