Black girl is shot by black teen over an argument with her uncle

A 19-month-old black girl who was hit by a bullet intended for her uncle has lost her eye, authorities said as they announced the arrest of the black gunman. Damark King, 19 years old, has been charged in the shooting that injured toddler Samyah Bailey as she sat in her stroller in the courtyard of her apartment building. Samyah was hit in the face, the victim of an argument between her uncle, Anthony Mahoney, and a friend of King, a law-enforcement official with knowledge of the case said. Mahoney and the friend, Durrell McCollough, were fighting over a woman both men had dated, the official said. King began firing at Mahoney but instead hit Samyah, who was also with her father, authorities said. The toddler is recovering from surgery at Richmond University Medical Center. She is in stable condition, the official said. The bullet entered her left temple and exited between her eyes, causing her to lose one, the official said. Her uncle, Mahoney, was arrested on an outstanding warrant, the official said. King, who has previous arrests for assault, was arrested as he fled in a Dodge Charger with three others after a security guard at the complex followed him after the shooting and gave police a description of the car. Police recovered a loaded .9mm firearm, believed to be the weapon King used, hidden in a potted plant on the front porch of a nearby home, the official said. Four .9mm shell casings were recovered at the scene of the shooting, the official said. He was ordered held without bail.
