The Black Caucus and the Israel Lobby

In 1973, Arthur Hertzberg, then president of the American Jewish Congress, met with Rep. Charles Rangel in a New York hotel and promised the congressman that the Jewish community would continue to support welfare programs for African-Americans if the black leadership would keep quiet about Israel's ties to apartheid South Africa. Hertzberg proudly described the deal in his memoir, A Jew In America.
