A former Quebec director of B’nai Brith has received the minimum 45-day jail term after pleading guilty to a child pornography charge

Bill Surkis will serve the time on weekends. A judge ruled in Montreal that Surkis must also do 240 hours of community service and be on probation for three years. The Crown and defense both agreed the 71-year-old Surkis should receive the minimum sentence allowed by law. The former Jewish community leader pleaded guilty in May 2010 to possessing child pornography. Police found 21 videos on his computer, with some depicting girls between the ages of six and 14 engaging in sex with adults. The Crown wanted to have Surkis declared a registered sex offender, but the judge decided not to put him on the national registry and also did not order a DNA sample to be taken.
